Warsaw/Teatr Wielki-Polish National Ballet – Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake”, choreographed by Krzysztof Pastor

27 June 2019 - 29 June 2019 | 19:00 | Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera | Warsaw

The ballet audiences are perfectly familiar with this German ballet fairy tale to music by Tchaikovsky, about Prince Siegfried torn between his love for Odette turned into a swan and her fiery opposite Odile, who is thrown into his arms by a devious wizard. After many productions of the traditional version of Swan Lake in Warsaw, Krzysztof Pastor and librettist Paweł Chynowski decided to move the story to the reality of the tsarist court in the final years of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s life. Respecting the spirit of the Romantic original, they drew on a Polish theme, a true story that happened to the Russian heir to the throne, Nicholas. For years, the tsarevich was faithful to his youthful love for Princess Alix of Hesse, but Tsar Alexander III did not approve. Through his father, Nicholas met and fell in love with Polish ballerina Matylda Krzesińska (Mathilde Kschessinska). He was possessed by his passion, leading to a well-known social scandal at the court in St. Petersburg on the eve of Nicholas II’s ascension to the throne. Despite the changed libretto, the show retains the most precious ‘swan’ sequences from the academic choreography by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa.

Poznań/Choreographic Commissions 2019: Polish Dance Theatre “45” – dir. and chor. Jacek Przybyłowicz - Premiere

29 June 2019 | 21:00 | Premiere

At the end of the artistic season, the Polish Dance Theatre invites its audience for a special jubilee performance entitled 45. The title of the performance refers to the number of Polish Dance Theatre’s artistic seasons completed since its foundation by Conrad Drzewiecki in 1973. 45,directed and choreographed by Jacek Przybyłowicz, will take the audience on an interactive journey. The “wandering” structure of the piece is closely related to the history of the Polish Dance Theatre, which, from the very beginning of its existence, did not have its own stage. 45 is a site-specific performance designed for the Poznań International Fair Hall. The performance makes use of fragments of chronicles, reviews, descriptions and academic publications of the Polish Dance Theatre from the period 1973-2018.

The premiere of 45 is part of the Malta Festival 2019 program.
