Anna Nowicka is a dancer, choreographer, teacher, and yoga instructor. She graduated from the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (SEAD) in Austria and the psychology department of the University of Warsaw.
She studied dance for many years in Warsaw, working with Anna Godowska, a dancer, choreographer, and teacher involved with the Bretoncaffe Theatre. She also took part in projects developed, mainly in Olsztyn, by Przemysław Wasilkowski, an actor and long-standing collaborator of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards in Pontadera, Italy.
She considers the collaboration with Mala Kline as one of her most important dance experiences. In the 2008/2009 season she went to Slovenia to take part in Tomi Janezics post-graduate programme for performers. Since 2008 she has been involved in the organization of improvisation meetings at the Fourklor Studio in Ljubljana (2008-2010) and in Berlin; she also has taken part in the improvisation Willany Leo in Budapest. Since 2003 she has been actively participating in group projects and dance performances in Poland and abroad (Austria, Croatia, Greece, Slovenia, Germany, and Budapest).
Her choreographic practice has been connected with the Art Stations Foundation in Poznań since 2010, when she took part in Solo Project, a residency programme for young choreographers. Her choreographies have won Anna a range of prizes and scholarships: fire is raging in your hair won the 100 GRAD festival in HAU, Berlin (2012), while the solo the truth is just a plain picture. said bob. (Solo Project 2010) was shown at the Polish Dance Platform 2012. Annas latest solo I never fall apart, because I never fall together, a collaboration with dramaturge Ivoną Šijaković, has its Polish premiere on 13 April at the Old Brewery in Poznań.
In her artistic explorations Anna focuses on the relationship between the sleeping and the dancing body, and in particular on the choreography of the imagined. In her practice she investigates a multiplicity of seeing perspectives and possibilities of using different points of view as tools to discover and reveal all possible images, even those seemingly unavailable to the eye. She considers choreographing as a continuous examination of the relation and tension between the creative process and its outcome (understood also as a side-effect of research). Annas artistic journey began when she meet Anna Godowska and developed with her long-time collaboration with Slovenian choreographer Mala Kline.
Currently, Anna is studying at The School of Images under Dr Catherine Shainberg and is dividing her life between Berlin and Poland.
Apart from her artistic practice, she is also engaged in teaching. She was Anna Godowskas assistant at the Dance and Acting Studio and Centre for Creative Work in Warsaw (20032005),taught contemporary dance at Hanna Kamińskas Dance and Acting Studio in Warsaw (20052006), as well as a yoga and dance as part of Do it! at SEAD (Salzburg 20072008).
