This Saturday and Sunday will see last two of the exhibition “You come, we’ll show you what we do. On dance improvisation” held at ms2 (Museum of Art) in Łódź. On Saturday (7 pm) Dawid Lorencand Marcin Masecki are going to present their improvised performance based on Steve Paxton’s improvisation on Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations played by Glenn Gould (a recorded version of Paxton’s improvisation is also part of the exhibition). Lorenc and Masecki are thus inspired by the art of fugue and its contemporary interpretations, both musical and chorographical (and their mutual influences), as well as by improvisation itself.
Sunday, 20 October, is the last chance to visit the exhibition: on 5 pm you will have a chance to tour it together with curators Agata Woźniczko and Mateusz Adamczyk.
Following that, at 6 pm, mała litera café at ms2 (ul. Ogrodowa 19, Manufaktura) will host the launch of the book Przyjdźcie, pokażemy Wam, co robimy. O improwizacji tańca[You come, we’ll show you what we do. On dance improvisation] by Sonia Nieśpiałowska-Owczarek and Katarzyna Słoboda (eds.), which is the first publication on this topic in Poland and one of few devoted to contemporary dance. Collecting 25 texts, either translated into Polish for the first time or written especially for the publication, the anthology discusses dance improvisation in a multilayered fashion, presenting the cultural and social context in which it originally developed in the USA. The book contains translations of philosophical texts devoted to the fundamentals of improvisation.
The publication was published thanks to a financial contribution from the Institute of Music and Dance under the 2013 Publication Programme.
After the launch, at 7 pm, Iwona Olszowska is going to present her lecture performance with the participation of her guests.
