Museum of Art in Łódź (ms2) and Komuna Warszawa present UNISONO re//mix Anna Halprin by Aleksandra Borys and featuring Marysia Zimpel, to be performed on 3 August (7 pm) as part of the museum’s exhibition Przyjdźcie, pokażemy Wam, co robimy. O improwizacji tańca [Come, we’ll show you what we do. About dance improvisation]. The exhibition’s title is a reference to the series of first contact improvisation presentations You come, we’ll show you what we do presented by Steve Paxton and his fellow practitioners during their 1973 tour of the US West Coast. The title also sums up the exhibition’s dynamic character as it constantly changes inviting active participation from visitors. It also offers events of different format encouraging nonschematic viewing, facilitated by its mobile architecture made up of “improvisation devices” designed by BudCud group.
Aleksandra Borys: “In my RE//MIX I want to find out, together with my fellow artists, how Anna Halprin’s methods and modes of worktranslate into our reality. I am curious in how, after so many years of a very specific work in a closed studio, coming out into ‘wide openspaces’ will influence my body and its movement, and my choreographic practice. I want to find out how the observations and reflectionstaking place in the course of my work will correspond to and diverge from what Anna Halprin arrived at. Inspired by her work, I follow hermotto that ‘a dancer is an element of a picture’.”
Anna Halprin is undoubtedly a pioneer of contemporary dance. In 1955-65 she ran the Dancers Workshops in San Francisco, which
turned out to be play a pivotal role for such dancers/choreographers as Simone Forti, Trisha Brown or Yvonne Rainer. Halprin focusedon joint experimenting and searching instead of the standard teacher-student relation. With her students she studied anatomy as the basisof movement, experience-building improvisation, and invited collaboration from painters, sculptors and musicians, doing away with theboundaries between different disciplines. Her workshops would take place in an open-air studio. In her method Halprin explored sources ofmovement, its structure and dynamics looking at rituals and myths.
