On Thursday, 26 March (9pm) Ramona Nagabczyńska will present her RE//akumulacja (RE//accumulation) at the Uovo Performing Arts Festival in Milan, Italy (Teatro Franco Parenti).
RE//akumulacja (RE//accumulation) is a dance solo produced by Komuna//Warszawa as part of the famous RE//MIX series, which lasted from 2010 to 2014, and featured Poland’s most prominent stage directors, choreographers, and visual artists, including Strzępka & Demirski, Krzysztof Garbaczewski, Akademia Ruchu, Leszek Bzdyl and Kaya Kołodziejczyk. RE//akumulacja is a remix of a piece by Trisha Brown, American choreographer and pioneer of postmodern dance.
Choreographer Ramona Nagabczyńska decided to remix Accumulation, one of Brown’s flagship works and a piece which changed the course of dance history. In the short piece lasting only 6 minutes Brown’s characteristically unconstrained movements get accumulated with a new gesture being added each time the dancer repeats the choreographic sequence. Remixing Accumulation seemed particularly interesting to the choreographer as it generates a double quotation: Brown quotes herself in her choreography while Nagabczyńska quotes Brown in her remix.
RE//akumulacja draws attention to a similarity between accumulation as an artistic idea and accumulation as a natural process by way of which a dancer’s body learns to move. A dancer develops by accumulating an individual repertory of movement quotations. The quotations may come from the author or be a processed version. Each time this happens, something gets shifted or overlaid, generating a new quality. That is h as seen in the quality of Nagabczyńska’s movement and the choreographic quality of her piece.
