On Wednesday, 30 October (8 pm), Kaya Kołodziejczyk is going to show her Brith Outat Poznań’s CK Zamek (Exhibition room) as part of the programme of performance art Archive of the Body curated by Anna Królica. Birth Outstarted out with questions: Is it possible to isolate signs evoking heritage and tradition from spatial and social relations? May pop mean folk? Is reconstruction possible and what form can it take? In what direction will movement proceed when given only limited space?
The performers began their work with a reconstruction of the choreography and music ofKrzesany, a piece by Conrad Drzewiecki, rooted in the dance tradition of Polish highlands – Podhale. Thirty years after it premiered in 1977 in Poznań, it resurfaced in Belgrade as it is in the Serbian capital that dancers led by Kaya Kołodziejczyk started their work onBrith Outand where the project now concludes as an installation for five dancers to be shown in gallery space. Gone is dancing in a circle, as are folk costumes –Birth Outis a completely new piece emerging from the old-time choreography and the tradition of Podhale, a choreographic palimpsest.
The use of improvisation techniques based on neurology and visualisation made it possible for the dancers to release their individual potentials, especially that each of them represents a different dance school and movement aesthetics. By means of the intimate mobile installations, powered by exceptional physical closeness of the object, viewers are confronted with the diversity of the performers and prompted to reflect on their expectations are regards the perception of a moving body in a gallery/theatre.
Brith Out… is a dance piece/installation for five dancers. It started out in Belgrade (October 2007) as part of a multidisciplinary artistic project “Resonance” (Poland-Serbia-Switzerland) supported by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia. The piece’s Warsaw premiere took place at the 2008 Rozdroże festival held at the Centre for Contemporary Art – Ujazdowski Castle.
