We are pleased to announce one of the major dance events in Poland in 2017, presented as part of the NFM Dance cycle. On Wednesday, 8 March, the Akram Khan Company will perform Until the Lions at the National Forum of Music in Wrocław (pl. Wolnosci 1). Tickets for the show are currently on sale.
Until the lions have their own historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunter. (an African proverb)
Until the Lions is a choreographic response to the tale of Amba/Shikhandi of the Mahabharata ? the classic epic in Sanskrit. Akram Khan has been developing the story since his childhood. Poet and writer Karthika Na?r tells the story anew, introducing marginal characters to her latest book Until the Lions: Echoes from the Mahabharata.
The Akram Khan Company debuted in Poland in 2009 at the 8th ?Body/Mind? International Contemporary Dance Festival, where it presented its piece BAHOK, returning in 2011 in 2011 with presentations of Vertical Road at the 21st Łódź Ballet Festival and the 8th Poznań Ballet Spring.
Akram Khan is one of the most celebrated and respected dance artists today. In just over 16 years, he has created a body of work that has contributed significantly to the arts in the UK and abroad. His reputation has been built on the success of imaginative, highly accessible and relevant productions such as DESH, iTMOi, Vertical Road, Gnosis and zero degrees. An instinctive and natural collaborator, Akram has been a magnet to world-class artists from other cultures and disciplines. His previous collaborators include the National Ballet of China, actress Juliette Binoche, ballerina Sylvie Guillem, choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Israel Galván, singer Kylie Minogue, visual artists Anish Kapoor, Antony Gormley and Tim Yip, writer Hanif Kureishi and composers Steve Reich, Nitin Sawhney, Jocelyn Pook and Ben Frost. Akram?s work is recognised as being profoundly moving, and his intelligently crafted storytelling is effortlessly intimate and epic. Described by the Financial Times as an artist ?who speaks tremendously of tremendous things,? a recent career highlight was the creation of a section of the opening ceremony for the London 2012 Olympic Games, received with unanimous acclaim.
