On Saturday, 24 October, the Stanisław Moniuszko Grand Theatre in Poznań will stage its first premiere in the 2015/16 season. The premiere night will include two choreographies, George Balanchine?s Serenade and Jacek Przybyłowicz?s Infolia.
In 1934, shortly after his arrival in New York, Balanchine ? by then a dancer at Sergei Diaghilev?s Ballet Russes ? founded an independent ballet company, which he named the Shcool of American Ballet (now New York City Ballet). Serenade was his first original work, based on P. Tchaikovsky?s Serenade for string orchestra. 28 dancers in blue costumes dance to Tchaikovsky?s enthrallingly melodious composition. Balanchine would often stress the special spiritual relationship he had with the Russian composer. They both studied at the same conservatory in Saint Petersburg. Following its premiere, Serenade has undergone several changes and remained one of the key works in the New York City Ballet?s repertoire and one of the canonical pieces of the 20th century ballet repertory.
The presentation of this composition at the Grand Theatre is a landmark event in the history of Poznań?s ballet company: on the one hand, it will showcase the versatility of its dancers; on the other, it is a work of significant artistic and educational significance.

Commissioned by the Stanisław Moniuszko Grand Theatre in Poznań, Jacek Przybyłowicz?s latest choreography Infolia has been inspired by Polish contemporary composers: Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Wojciech Kilar, and Prasqual.
Jacek Przybyłowicz choreographic debut came during his stint as a dancer of the Teatr Wielki ? Polish National Ballet in Warsaw, bringing him instant awards and recognition. In 1991, Przybyłowicz left Poland to work with companies in Germany and Israel, engaging a lasting cooperation with one of the world?s top contemporary dance companies, Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company (Israel), with whom he appeared at a number of prestigious contemporary dance festivals in the world. In 2002, he returned to Poland to choreograph Naszyjnik gołębicy [The Dove?s Necklace] (2003) at Ewa Wycichowska?s Polish Dance Theatre. Since then, he has collaborated with a number of leading ballet companies in Poland, including Opera Narodowa ? Polish National Ballet, as well as foreign companies (among others in Spain and Czech Republic), presenting his choreographies at numerous dance festivals. Przybyłowicz spent five seasons as the Deputy Ballet Director at the Stanisław Moniuszko Grand Theatre in Poznań.
