On Friday. 19 June (7 pm) the Good Girl Killer will premiere their latest piece What?s wrong with happiness at Club Żak in Gdańsk, marking the collective?s 10th anniversary. The piece has been devised and is performed by Anna Steller and Magdalena Jędra.

From the artists:

It’s this common thing we wish each other on every occasion and a promise of paradise we all would sell our souls for.

Something’s wrong with happiness.

At least all’s not the way it was supposed to be, not as we’ve planned it, because happiness was our plan from day one, of course.

An illusory phenomenon, so close at hand and so our of reach.

Immaterial.

It comes and goes; absorbed by its presence, you don’t even notice that it’s floated out of the window. Or it stays forever, but reveals itself to be what it is only decades later. It was impossible to recognise from a distance so short.

Perhaps you’ll never encounter it. After all, nobody knows what it looks like. Some tried to paint models of it, but produced loads of kitsch instead. Now it’s stocked somewhere, useless. Something’s wrong with happiness.

Landmarks like this make you think.

We were lucky to have met each other around ten years ago. Working with Krzysztof “Leon” Dziemaszkiewicz on Cafe Domino zaprasza, we reached an understanding at some storey of our unconscious and something changed deep within us. After six months of rehearsals with Zibi Bieńkowski and Grzegorz Welizarowicz we showed our first piece at Club Żak: Good Girl Killer. We gave ourselves the same name.

That’s how it was supposed to be and couldn’t be any other way.

In 2005 she set up the Good Girl Killer collective with Magda Jędra. Anna’s pieces have been shown as part of the performance art programme Old Brewery New Dance of the Art Stations Foundation and the Malta Festival in Poznań, Maat Festival in Lublin, L1 Contemporary Dance Festival in Budapest, International Contemporary Dance Festival Body/Mind in Warasw, Heineken Open’er in Gdynia, and Four Days in Prague. In 2003 she received a Dance Web scholarship at the  ImPulsTanz dance festival in Vienna. For many years she has been involved in many projects of the Witold Gombrowicz Municipal Theatre in Gdynia, the Wybrzeże Theatre, and the Łaźnia Contemporary Art Centre in Gdańsk.

Magdalena Jędra is a dancer, choreographer, and performer. She began her dancing career at the Gdańsk Dance Theatre of Melissa Monteros and Wojciech Mochniej (1997?1999). 2005 marks her first collaboration with Anną Steller and musicians Grzegorz Welizarowicz and Zbigniew Bieńkowski titled Good Girl Killer, which gave the name to their collective. Her dance works display an affinity with performances and site-specific projects. Her creative process is fuelled on improvisation: when working on a choreography, she gives herself up to this process. She likes her creations to combine different styles and mix tools characteristic for what is referred to as “pop culture” and “highbrow culture”. She received the Award of the Mayor of Gdańsk for Young Artists for Good Girl Killer (2006). She also won a scholarship of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of Poland, along with a number of scholarships of the City of Gdańsk and the local authorities of the Pomerania province. She participated in the first choreographers’ exchange between Poland and Philadelphia, organised by the Art Stations Foundation in Poznań, Institute of Music and Dance in Warsaw, Polish Cultural Institute in New York, and Dance/USA Philadelphia. She runs classes of contemporary dance technique and improvisation. She works with many Polish artists; her permanent collaborator is Anna Steller. She lives in Gdańsk.
