On 21- 24 November two performance programmes will be presented in Kraków as part of Cricoteka’s project Who inspires us? Tadeusz Kantor! (Kto inspiruje? Tadeusz Kantor!). The first one – Polyphonies (Polifonie) – curated by Anna Szwajgier, as the title metaphorically indicates, features a polyphony of attitudes, genres and individualities set to improvised music, as well as experimental compositions including electronic tunes. The artists starring in Polyphonies also go beyond their typical roles: the series of concert-happenings and the action on stage have a lot in common with performance art and rendering musical narration theatrical. The programme includes a collage stitched of sounds and movement, conceived by Magdalena Przybysz and Sergej Maingardt and entitledDancing for the Birds, They Watching Us.

The second of the performance programmes – Choreographic Machine (Maszyna choreograficzna) – curated by Anna Królica, is fully devoted to choreography. The aim of the project is to set in motion a whirl of connections, associations and contexts linking contemporary choreography and Tadeusz Kantor’s output. Today’s dance makers, similarly to Kantor back in his day, are fascinated with the tangible aspect of the body, its shape, which may be negated by playing with the strategies of reception with formal tools. Consequently, the body suddenly becomes a shapeless mass, a contemporary sculpture, a statue, while the performance turns into an invitation for the audience to explore the theatre of anatomy. The programme features projects by Janusz Orlik, Tomasz Bazan, Iza Szostak and Karol Tymiński, along with a panel discussion on the use of authentic movement in stage practice (participants: Joanna Leśnierowska, Weronika Szczawińska, Ryszard Kalinowski, Bogdan Renczyński i Rafał Urbacki; moderator: Anna Królica).

Who inspires us? Tadeusz Kantor!aims to present the process of noticing and showcasing connections between Kantor’s ideas and different developments in the history of theatre and visual arts, as well as disciplines so far not straightforwardly associated with the Polish artist’s work, such as dance, music and performance arts. The project, to be implemented in the course of 2013 and 2014, will cover exhibitions, performance actions and publications. 2013 will see two out of three exhibitions planned as part of the project and two programmes of performance art: Choreographic Machineand Polyphonies.
