On 7 June maat festival – border line 2013 will have a new resident artist. Kaya Kołodziejczykis one of the most interesting Polish dancers, named in 2009 the most noteworthy dancer of the young generation by Germany’s “ballettanz” magazine.

As part of her residency stay, on 15 June (1 pm), Kaya Kołodziejczyk will run an open dance lesson – Lesson 3 – at Lublin’s Litewski square. The session is open to everybody; the only requirement is a sports outfit and an exercise mat. Please note that a registration in advance is needed: zapisy.maat@gmail.com.

On 17 June (7 pm) the programme’s curator, Tomasz Bazan will host a meeting with Kaya Kołodziejczyk at Lublin’s cafe Spółdzielnia. The discussion will revolve around dance, body, what dance is and what it is not, and the condition of Polish contemporary dance. The participants will also have a chance to watch recorded fragments of DIE KLAGE DER KAISERIN [The Plaint of the Empress] byPina Bausch, the most influential choreographer of the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Plaint of the Empress[Die Klage der Kaiserin]

Directed by Pina Bausch, UK, 1989

Directed by Pina Bausch, the feature film does not tell a story – it is rather a collage of scenes structured around changing seasons of the year. The director presents a metaphor of the futility of human action and quest for love. Traditional set design is replaced with landscapes: woodlands, meadows, a city centre.

“As my artistic career progresses, I ask myself about the new artistic paths that I get to know. I am doing a research focusing in part on the output of artists active in the 1960s and 70s across the USA. SOL is the title of my solo project on which I have been working since the beginning of 2013. In march I was a guest at Mad Brook Farm of Steve Paxton and Lisa Nelson, where I had the chance to participate in workshops and get better acquainted with the work of the forerunners of contact improvisation. Going further in my research, I began to trace artists connected with the Back to Land movement and link the idea of returning to nature with today’s artists’ need of isolation to find the creative focus (the example of Bread and Puppet Theatre). S.O.L stands for Shit Out of Luck and signifies the state when one is left with no more life options, is facing the wall, and the only thing that’s left is less than desirable – the black scenario (…)”.
