The second edition of the international tour of Choreographic Territories ? New Paths of the Avant-Garde was launched on 18 July. Audiences in six cities of Central and Eastern Europe, including Prague, Warsaw and Bucharest, will be able to see the most interesting presentations of Polish contemporary dance. On 28 July, as part of the 37. Studio Dance Stage at Studio Theatre in Warsaw, at 8.30 pm, a special presentation of the performance Second Nature, inspired by the life and dance of Pola Nireńska, will take place. Second Nature, co-produced among others by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and the Institute of Music and Dance, is part of a series presenting extraordinary women ? the icons of Polish dance.
The Choreographic Territories programme, carried out by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and the Institute of Music and Dance on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining independence, aims to introduce the icons of Polish dance to the international circulation of culture. Polish avant-garde artists of the early 20th century: Yanka Rudzka, Pola Nireńska, Marie Rambert and Bronisława Niżyńska inspire young dancers to carry out creative research and innovative, choreographic answers.
In 2019 Choreographic Territories focus on Pola Nireńska. Taking Nireńska life and work as a point of departure, Agata Siniarska (choreography), Karolina Grzywnowicz (installation) and Katarzyna Wolińska (performance), created Second Nature. The starting point for developing the choreographic material was the life story of Nireńska ? a dancer, a Polish Jewess who lost most of her family in the Holocaust. Siniarska, Grzywnowicz and Wolińska created Second Nature based on both Nireńska?s biography and her art ? especially the extraordinary Holocaust Tetralogy. The scenographic context for the performance is an installation ? a garden, created by Karolina Grzywnowicz. The garden is composed of plants which, due to their unique properties, were used by the Nazis in concentration camps. The premiere of the performance took place on 26 April 2019 in Dresden, during the Erbstücke Festival.
The presentation of Second Nature initiated the second edition of Choreographic Territories international tour that will showcase Polish dance performances in Prague, Żylin, Bucharest and Plovdiv. Apart from Second Nature, the international audience will also be able to see the most interesting Polish dance productions selected for the Polish Dance Platform.
In 2018, the Choreographic Territories series was initiated with the presentation of Yanka Rudzka Project: Polyphonies choreographed by Joanna Leśnierowska. The project brought together artists from Poland, Georgia, Armenia and Brasil. Yanka Rudzka Project: Polyphonies ? a performance that grew out of the polyphonic dialogue between four cultures, was presented during the first international tour of Choreographic Territories carried out in the East (Grodno, Minsk, Dnipro, Tbilisi, Yerevan and Kyiv).
Choreographic Territories ? New Paths of the Avant-Garde is a multi-annual project that aims at presenting the most interesting performances of Polish contemporary dance featuring best Polish artists, teachers and dance researchers connected with the Polish Dance Platform.
The project?s programme, planned for 2017-2022, is filled with performances, workshops, meetings and debates in the most active contemporary dance centres in Central and Eastern Europe, including Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, Hungary, Georgia, Armenia, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Serbia and Bulgaria.
The project is organised by Adam Mickiewicz Institute in co-operation with the Institute of Music and Dance, Lublin Centre for Culture, Art Stations Foundation and local partners from Central-Eastern Europe. Choreographic Territories ? New Paths of the Avant-Garde is realized within the multi-annual NIEPODLEGŁA 2017-2022 programme of the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Financed by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage within the Multi-annual Programme NIEPODLEGŁA 2017-2022.
The installation ? garden accompanying Second Nature performance was created with the support of the Pilecki Institute, new research and cultural institution whose main objective is to create an international digital archive on Poland during World War II.

Additionally, Yanka Rudzka Project: Polyphonies will be presented on 13 November in Lublin (International Dance Theatres Festival) and on 15 November 2019 in Cracow (Rollercoaster Festival. Collectors of Sensations). Furthermore, during the International Dance Theatres Festival in Lublin in November, an installation from the Second Nature performance will also be presented.
