This year?s Malta Festival will be graced by the international icon of choreography, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, who is going to present two of her pieces to Poznań?s audience. The first one ? titled Fase ? in which the choreographer appears herself, will be shown this Saturday and Sunday at 7pm at Aula Artis (ul. Kutrzeby 10). The second ? a group choreography called Drumming ? will be presented next weekend, on 21 and 22 June at 8pm, at the same venue.

Malta Festival will also be a chance to get to know the famous Belgian?s other choreographies thanks to special screenings of recorded performances of Rain by the Ballet de l’Opéra National de Paris  (15 June, 8:30pm) and Achterland (21 June, 8:30pm). Both screenings are to take place at Aula Artis.

What is more, on 27 June (9:30pm) the festival?s audience will see Another Song, a performance created in 2009 by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, Ann Veronica Janssens, and Michael François for artists studying at P.A.R.T.S., or Performing Arts Research and Training Studios, a school  De Keersmaeker founded. In the piece, to be shown in Wolności square, light, movement and silence, are juxtaposed with fragments of The Beatles? famous The White Album . On the following day, also at 9:30pm in Wolności square, P.A.R.T.S. students will present their etudes: Previously on MajestinyScheme arrangementsThe Eternity Ship Question, and Get out of the blue. The showcase?s umbrella title is Personal Work. Admission to both events is free.

About the pieces:

Fase (1982) is De Keersmaeker?s choreographic debut, staged for the first time at the age of 22 to an immediate acclaim of both audiences and critics. It remains the artist?s most frequently shown choreography. The performance, in which she stars herself, is a fascinating experience arising from the combination of pure, abstract movement and extremely powerful emotions which it triggers. Fase consists of two duets and one solo, made to four of Steve Reich?s compositions: Piano PhaseCome OutViolin PhaseClapping Music from the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the compositions, a musician plays a phrase that has been performed before at a slower pace by other musicians. The motifs wander from one instrument to another, creating a plethora of mirror images. The choreography is built on the same phrasing principle: repetition and shifting. The result is a mechanism that delights with its excellence and, above all, simplicity and natural character.

Drumming (1998) is one of Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker?s most fascinating choreographies. It is based on Steve Reich?s composition with the same title. The work by this pioneer of American minimalism was created in the years 1970-1971, shortly after his journey to Africa. Apart from human voices used like instruments, it also employs bongos, marimbas, bells and a piccolo. One rhythmic motif, developing into numerous diverse structures, recurs obsessively. Keersmaeker?s choreography is also built around one dance phrase, which undergoes mutations in time and space. The choreographer remains true to the original composition?s spirit but takes it a bit further. The audience witnesses a fascinating journey, feeling incoming waves of energy in the form of pure dance and sound.

Rain is Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker?s third choreography to the music of Steve Reich. It was created in 2001, and in 2011 was included in the repertoire of the Opéra National de Paris. This was the first time that De Keersmaeker?s choreography had been interpreted by dancers who were not from her company. Two filmmakers, Olivia Rochette and Gerard-Jan Claes, followed the work process at the Opera: from the auditions and rehearsals, to the opening performance. The documentary shows not only the performance, but also how De Keersmaeker worked with classically trained ballet dancers.

Achterland, directed by Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker, is a film adaptation of a stage production of the same name from 1990. The black and white film was shot on the set of the stage production at the Rosas rehearsal studio. It is not, however, a mere technical recording of the production, but an autonomous audiovisual work that is uniquely sophisticated in its form.
