Krystyna Lama Szydłowska: Hygiene of Identity

?Hygiene of Identity? is a performative practice in the form of a collective ritual. Three performers question their own identity and through insisting on individual daily rituals aim to discover the unconscious ?I.? The concept of ?hygiene? refers directly to habits of keeping our bodies and houses clean, installed in us from early childhood. Accepting the habit, we allow ourselves consciously to ?not know?, and to recognize ourselves anew, again and again. Thus we discover our identity as a kind of mindfulness, an existential self-awareness, and a sense of belonging to the community.

Karolina Kraczkowska: Sci-Fi Ceremonials

?Blade Runner? is a dystopian futuristic vision infused with philosophical perspectives on reality and human dependencies. In a world of advanced technology, who and what counts as human? Replicants become an object of comparison, refer us back to our actual condition. How do we construct our sense of identity? Can we rely on our perception? How do we know for sure what we are? What if the greatest illusion of all is me myself? The piece investigates the tension between organic and inorganic, body and mind, origin, duration, termination date, choice ? an outcome of one?s own deep and authentic desire ? versus mechanical, programmed pattern. Is there the one conception of humanity or is being human a constant work in progress?

Wojciech Grudziński: Populuxe

Derived from the combination of luxury and popularity, Populuxe was a new consumer and cultural aesthetic popular in the 1950s in the United States. ?Populuxe? operates with lines, forms, textures and colors to giveus beauty, charm and elegance in terms of convenience, comforts and necessities. ?Populuxe? balances between the individual and the social, between Googie architecture and the historical figure of Sergei Diaghilev, between the unequal distribution of wealth and ecology, to create a synthetic choreographic genre based on the concept of luxury movement. ?Populuxe? exists in the spirit of the thoroughly vulgar joy of being able to live so well.

Artistic coach: Peter Pleyer

?Since the beginning of the Solo Project program, I have witnessed a whole generation of its residents, the exciting young Polish dance makers changing choreographic scene in Poland and situating it into the European and world culture of dance.

The growing international network and the wish for stronger bonds into the national scene are not excluding each other, they rather complement each other in the wish to being seen moving. Articulating ones art in choreography is multilayered, complex and interdisciplinary process, it asks for open spaces to experiment and good guidance in the task of formulating a piece, both offered here, within Solo Project. My coaching is strongly informed by the development of choreography and dance as an independent art form that does not succumb to the overpowering structures of drama-theater and the fine-arts. Instead it can inform and be informed in an open and fair exchange of ideas, working methods and aesthetic appeal. Especially through the techniques developed in the last 30 years that center the body as the main source of the inquiry and the site where the art is happening, anatomical, social and political. A much needed emancipation is therefore on its way, and it will enrich the future of cultural production and the shape of the community we live in.?

Peter Pleyer graduated from the European Dance Development Centre in Arnhem. He worked as dancer and choreographic assistant with Yoshiko Chuma (New York) and Mark Tompkins (Paris). He moved to Berlin in 2000 to dance and run the Tanztage Berlin festival. With big interest in the theoretical studies in dance making, he developed ?choreographing books? (2005) ? a lecture/installation with his view on the development of dance studies in the US and Europe. He also became an acclaimed dance pedagogue teaching worldwide. In 2014 he resumed his choreographic work with solo ?Ponderosa Trilogy? and group format ?Visible Undercurrent?. In 2016, in CSW in Warsaw, the choreographic exchange with dancers from Poland and Berlin ?Moving the Mirror? has been created (in co-production with Art Stations Foundation). In 2017 the group work ?cranky bodies dance reset? premiered in Berlin. Peter has also developed a long term relationship with the Art Stations Foundation, where he has performed many of his pieces and taughtat the Alternative Dance Academy. In 2010 he was the mentor for Solo Project artists Anna Nowicka, Aleksandra Borys, and Rafał Urbacki.

Solo Project was established by the Art Stations Foundation in 2006 as the first ever residency programme in Poland. Its aim was to support Polish dance makers in their first choreographic steps and their search for individual artistic language. The programme has always been dedicated to dance makers whose interests verge beyond the traditionally understood ?dance theatre.? Its main interest lies in the creative process and artistic experiments, thus inviting its residents to reflect on, and discuss, the art of choreography itself. The motto of the project comes from the acclaimed choreographer Jonathan Burrows: ?One needs two legs, two hands and, most of all, a head to create a dance,? which encourages young artists to take artistic risks and direct their focus towards (self) reflection and constant questioning of their individual creative strategies and stances. So far, production, publicity and essential artistic support (coaching) assistance has been extended to 29 artists participating in the programme. In 2015, the programme has been inviting applications involving duo and trio performances. Thus, the Solo Project Plus has emerged.
