On Thursday 25 February at 6 pm the Old Brewery New Dance and Art Stations Foundation are holding another meeting in the Alternative Dance Academy 2016 series. The guest, Ben J. Riepe, is a choreographer devoted to creating artistic strategies leading to site-specific installations, providing space for interplay of dance, music, visual arts, performance, live art and sound installations.

Working with the boundaries of the ephemeral constitutes a recurring motif of Ben J. Riepe?s projects. He is interested in the concepts of presence and absence, subject and object. Long-term artistic explorations have provided a framework for many of his works, including stage work, installations and video projects presented extensively in Europe and Asia. The artist will talk about his work on the upcoming installation UUUtopia which will be ready in June for the Old Brewery New Dance at Malta Festival 2016, and will also present excerpts from his earlier projects.

The meeting will be held in English. Host: Joanna Leśnierowska. Free admission.

Ben J. Riepe studied dance and choreography at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen. After graduation, he worked as a dancer for Pina Bausch and for V.A. Wölfl/Neuer Tanz. He runs his own dance company, which he founded in 2004, and works as a guest choreographer and teacher. He has created choreography for many international dance companies, including the Malaysian Kwang Tung Dance Company, Folkwang Tanzstudio of Essen and Korea National Contemporary Dance Company of Seoul. In 2008, together with five other European artists, he participated in a creative exchange project with Chinese choreographers as part of Chin-A-Moves. In 2015, he took part in European projects Identity.Move! and  Modul Dance.

Ben J. Riepe has received many scholarships and awards, including the Spitzenförderung stipend in 2009, 2012 and 2015, and Förderpreis für darstellende Kunst des Landes NRW award for young artists from North Rhine-Westphalia in 2009. As a teacher, he consults young choreographers and runs movement and improvisation workshops for dancers and other performative artists. Currently, he is an associate artist in PACT Zollverein in Essen.

In recent years, Ben J. Riepe has focused on exploring the relationships between choreography and visual arts, particularly installations, performance, live art and sound installations.
