World-famous French prima ballerina Sylvie Guillem is going to perform at the 23rd Łódź Ballet Festival on 15 and 16 May (Grand Theatre in Łódź, 7 pm). After close to 35 years on stage, the artist sets off on her last tour with her farewell programme. The audience in Łódź will have a chance to see Live in Progress before the piece’s official premiere in London. Sylvie Guillem will present two new choreographs, including techne, a solo with live music devised by the author of Sacred Monsters, Akram Khan. Also part of the programme is a duo with Italian dancer Emanuela Montanari of La Scala, titled Here & After, whose choreographer Russell Maliphant is the author of the award-winning PUSH. Guillem will also dance a moving choreography by Mats Ek titled Bye, created especially for her 6000 Miles Away programme, and Duo by William Forsythe, to performed by Brigel Gjoka and Riley Watts.

In the course of her international career Sylvie Guillem has danced at the Paris Opera, as well as the Royal Opera House, La Scala, or American Ballet Theatre, performing choreographies by the most outstanding choreographers of the 20th century, such as Maurice Béjart, Mats Ek, William Forsythe, Frederick Ashton, or Kenneth MacMillan. The show will be decided into four parts: choreographies created especially for Sylvie Guillem, commissioned by Sadler’s Wells, created by Akram Khan and Russell Maliphant, and by Mats Ek and William Forsythe.

Sylvie Guillem started out as a gymnast with Olympic hopes, yet her ballet teachers realised the talent she had and convinced her to become a dancer. She joined the ballet of the Paris Opera at the age of 16 and started jumping up the career ladder fat, each year winning new dance competitions. Her skill and dramatic talent prompted Rudol Nuriev to call a 19-year old Sylvie a star. A series of invitations from top choreographers followed, including Maurice Béjart (Arépo, Sissi Impératrice, Bolero, The Rite of Spring), Mats Ek (Wet Woman, Smoke), and William Forsythe (France Danse). Many choreographies were devised especially for her. In the course of her international career Sylvie Guillem has danced at the Paris Opera, as well as the Royal Opera House, La Scala, or American Ballet Theatre. Since 2006 she has been affiliated with Sadler?s Wells and secured her position as a leading force in contemporary dance, for which she gave up classical ballet almost entirely.
