Curators about the pieces: In his dance piece Janusz Orlik will invite the audience on a journey through the labyrinth of human body bombarded every day by a cacophony of stimuli. Magda Ptasznik will introduce us to the secrets of experimental choreography that fosters conditions to experience the world in a different way than usually. In turn, Ramona Nagabczyńska’s extremely energetic performance will show how music penetrates performers’ bodies and provides an impulse for subsequent physical actions.

PERFORMANCE WEEK ? THE PROGRAMME

About the pieces:

Insight seeks to find a physical and visual representation for emotional states of alienation from the surrounding reality. By placing the protagonist in a simultaneously realistic and metaphorical space of a stage which is dense with micro gestures, shadows and voices, the show confronts the inner and outer world providing us with an insight into some ambiguous emotional states that are, nonetheless, familiar to us all. Translated into a powerful language of movement and image they draw us into a tense journey in the labyrinth of the human body that clashes, day after day, with the cacophony of the stimuli which surround it. Insight is yet another instalment in the artistic dialogue between Janusz Orlik and Joanna Les?nierowska, which has been going on for almost a decade. It is also Janusz?s third solo in the Old Brewery New Dance programme. Janusz Orlik and Joanna Leśnierowska received the Minister of Culture and National Heritage’s Special Award for The Best Choreography at the Polish Dance Platform 2014.

surfing is a laboratory where the subjectivity of action is dispersed. It is a performance of an activation chain ? the physical action of the body makes objects move and the (re)actions of the objects initiate and transform further action. surfing is a ritual of releasing objects or, more precisely, a ritual of loosening our perception of the objects. In a wider perspective, it is a proposal for perceiving reality and adding new articulations to the experience of the environment and time.

surfing activates matter by focusing on its surface. It seeks experience in the contact with matter. It directs attention to what is on the surface, to what is visible and available. surfing provokes surface clashes, friction and abrasion. It observes directions within space, as well as the distances, the changing dynamics and the energetic differences of the actions in which surfaces meet.

The Warsaw premiere of surfing is a part of Research/Production. Dance in the Process of Articulation, a project of the Burdąg Foundation, and Performance Week.

New (Dis)Order

?(?) Rock dance tended to be exuberant and anarchically complex, while theatre dance was often pedestrian and minimal. The familiar joke summarized the situation: in the early 1960s people would go to a dance concert to watch people stand around, and afterwards everyone would go to a party and dance?.

? Cynthia Novack, Looking at Movement as Culture

The piece is a loop of energy that is transmitted from the music into performers’ bodies, and continuing its way from there as an impulse for the performers to take up new physical actions. These actions’ character changes from spontaneity to quotation, from intimacy to hedonism, from liberation to destruction, and infects the audience with energy and tension, as well as empathy. Because dance aesthetics is very subtly intertwined into the actions, the audience’s impression is that what they are a part of is a party, not a dance performance.
