Next week, Wrocław will see the beginning of In Between Festivals, a year-long series of events focusing on the Berlin jazz scene and contemporary dance. The dance event series will open on 17 February at 7 pm with Hermann Heisig?s show Slap/Stick. Heisig, a Berlin-based dancer and choreographer, a graduate of Die Etage, has worked for Meg Stuart, Damaged Goods, Tomasz Lehman and Martine Pisani. Slap/Stick is dedicated to the physicality of absent-mindedness, exaggeration and mechanical movement. It was produced by Heisig in collaboration with tanz.tausch and SOPHIENS?LE.

On the second day of the series, at 8 p.m. Rafał Dziemidok and Ewa Garniec will present My life in tears, a show whose title refers to the idea of employing dance to tell stories of human life. The project seeks a common plane for the need to preserve the language of movement?s abstract nature and the narratives of the characters created by the artists.

Both performances will be presented at ToTu (ul. Hubska 6). Meetings with artists will be hosted by Karolina Wycisk.

The next dance shows in the series, by Maria F. Scaroni and Karol Tymiński, will be take place on 16 March 2016.

About the performances:

SLAP/STICK is a full-length multi-dimensional project which deals with the elements of humour, comedy and absurdity in the expression of the human body. What is the essence of the “comic” in relation to the human body? To what extent is the comic something that goes beyond the “funny”, to something that makes us a human being, a body?

SLAP/STICK is the result of Hermann Heisig’s search for the absurd, comical body in contemporary dance, with the starting point provided by ?Laughter – An Essay on the Meaning of the Comic? (1900) by French philosopher Henri Bergson and the gestural material of comedian Peter Sellers, Helge Schneider, Jacques Tati and Heinz Erhard. On the basis of characteristics that bring Henri Bergson with the element of comedy in it, such as numbness, absent-mindedness or surge, SLAP/STICK makes workings of the laughter-like and comical for the audience, and creates a physical perspective on significance levels of humour beyond “merriness” or entertainment. The humorous effect produced here is, however, a very welcome by-product.

My life in tears

The title of the piece expresses the idea of using dance as a tool for telling the stories of human life. The project seeks a common ground between the need to preserve the abstract nature of the movement language and the specific narrations coming from characters created by the performers. Those characters are storytellers, masters of ceremony, comedians, clowns, or combinations of such cliché figures, who are permitted by the culture to both amuse and preach to the audience. This happens mostly by sublimation of their own, personal experience, stored in their physicality.
