In Between Festivals is a year-long series of events focusing on the Berlin jazz scene and contemporary dance. As part of dance events, in March Maria F. Scaroni and Karol Tymiński will show their performances Display and This is a musical on March 16 at 7 pm at the Centre for Artistic Initiatives (ul.  Tęczowa 79/81). The meeting with performers will be hosted by Ania Nowak.

In Between Festivals is the series of dance events opened with Herman Heisig?s Slap / Stick and My Life in Tears by Rafał Dziemidok and Ewa Garniec. All dance events within In Between Festivals 2016 will be complemented with talks about the methodology of contemporary dance hosted by Agata Siniarska, Ania Nowak and Karolina Wycisk. The talks aim to create a space for defining the tools, tactics and methods of work in contemporary choreography. In recent years, the domains, artistic processes and objectives in dance and choreography have expanded. These post-performance artist talks, while inviting the audience to active participation, will try to generate knowledge about choreography today and to define contexts of its operation, giving the audience tools to reflect on the various choreographic proposals forming the festival program.

The next dance shows in the series, by Vania Rovisco, will be take place in April 2016.

Display

Display is an inner dialogue, a body manifesto, a dance work for the stage created by ?monologuing? with Carolee Schneemann?s Interior Scroll (1975). The scroll is a papyrus, a site of knowledge that she recognizes as internal, intuitive and sacred. She extracted a text our of her genitalia, after a ritual-like set up, including posing in the nude, reading, and covering herself in mud.

Display attempts a reflection upon the ambition of the dancer?s body to integrate modes of knowledge making, merging a methodological and linear approach with an experiential, perceptual, radial way of proceeding via a ?carnivalesque? embodied discourse. It reflects upon the (female and dancer) body?s nuances of exposure, in a present state of becoming, weaving its lineages in this time where performance art and dance collide and move awkwardly forward. Plus necessary narcissism, healing work, an ignorant approach to creation and the unattainable distancing of life from art making.

choreography, dance, set design: Maria Francesca Scaroni

voice/sound production training: Alessio Castellacci

costumes: Peter Pleyer

The performance was created in a dialogue with Mariola Groener and Stephanie Maher.

This is a musical

In Karol Tymiński’s latest work This is a musical, the production of a visceral discordant and deeply queer electronic fantasy is built with a labouring body. Tymiński’s body is an instrument that produces a chain of samples, the electronic musical he weaves comes into being through a brutal choreography, the musical becomes a layered archive of the body?s pain, desire, and sheer joy. This is a composition of spliced time, where the history of the body?s desire that unfolds in space before the viewer continues to sing and mutate with strange resonance. The performer oscillates between tenderness and brutalism, creating a beatscape that evolves towards a massive trance like possibility space of madness and pleasure. This borderline body on stage is in rapture, he is the keeper of a threshold, he is methodically edging the audience in the direction of the ecstatic.
