Marysia Zimpel  is a dancer and choreographer. She holds an MA in cultural studies (thesis: Dance Practice: Mobile Space of Self-Creation) and has completed the Contemporary Dance, Choreography and Context programme at the Inter-University Centre for Dance (HZT) in Berlin (Universität der Künste).  

 

Zimpel studied dance with such prominent figures as Gill Clark, Rosalind Crisp, and  Isabelle Schad. In 2010 she began working for Shad as a dancer in Berlin (Music, Sophiensaele 2011; Experience#1,  Uferstudios 2012). In 2010 she joined the Vienna-based performance collective Gods Entertainment and was a member of the group until 2012. In May 2012 she was invited by Kattrin Deufert and Thomas Plischke to participate on their project (En)tropical Institute.

 

She has created a number of solo performances including Pure Matter (Tanz Fabrik in Berlin, 2009) and Epic (supported by the HZT in Berlin; premiered at the Musée de la danse, Choreographic Center Rennes, France, 2010). In 2012 she took part in the Solo Project programme of the Art Stations Foundation/Old Brewery New Dance in Poznań, which resulted in the piece What do you really miss Her solos have been shown in Berlin, Vienna (2011 ImageTanz), Amsterdam, Poznań, and elsewhere in Eurpe.

 

Zimpel has also been collaborating with representatives of other artistic disciplines. She created Walking like a dog, a duo with American poet Ezra Green (coproduced by ImageTaze, BtutWien, Vienna 2011); WORK, a collaboration with musician and composer Wacław Zimpel (Zamek Culture Centre, Poznań 2013); s c a t t e r, a collaboration with performer Zeina Hanna and experimental musician and composer Brian Eubanks (Zamek Culture Centre, Poznań, 2014). In 2013 she made a guest appearance in Aleksandra Boryss Unisono, a remix of Anna Halprins works produced as part of the RE//MIX series by Komuna//Warszawa, dancing in a duo with the choreographer.

 

Currently she is woking on noish~ together with experimental musician Gerard Lebik (whose first public performance took place as part of the PERFORMAT series at the Arsenał Municipal Gallery on 20 March 2014).

 

She is the founder of an independent performance art festival Serendypia, which was held  in 2010 and 2011 in Poznań in association with the Arsenał gallery.

 

Running, swimming, release, improvisation, and somatic practices have all been significant elements of Zimpels professional development. In her work, she focuses on dance, performance art, choreography, and movement research on the limits of physicality. She is interested in exploring how sound and movement depend on each other and form extraordinary interactions.
