The third lecture in the ?Points of Convergence? series (27 March, 6 pm, Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, ul. Emilii Plater 51) will  be devoted to the social, and will be run by Professor Shannon Jackson. Building upon the arguments of her recent book, Social Works,  Shannon Jackson considers the opportunities and difficulties of reconciling various histories of experimental art practice, social theory, and political governance. While ‘performance’ is a potential unifying category within this landscape, our conceptions of its social potential differ in particular art contexts and in relation to different political regimes. This lecture explores some key puzzles in the effort to join performance and social theory, using a variety of performance sites to think about relationality, antagonism, and public practice across art spheres.

Shannon Jackson: professor of theatre, dance and performance art at the University of California in Berkeley and head of the Arts Research Center there. In her research quest, Jackson is mainly occupied with the links between performance and the public sphere. Her recent publications include: ?Social Works: Performing Art, Supporting Publics? (Routledge 2011), ?Lines of Activity: Performance, Historiography, and Hull-House Domesticity? (2000) and ?Professing Performance: Theatre in the Academy from Philology to Performativity? (2004).

The following day, Professor Shannon Jackson will run a seminar (registration already closed).
