From 10 to 13 December 2015, the Centre for the Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor CRICOTEKA is pleased to invite everyone interested to the Cracow finale of the 7th Maat Festival ?Kantor Now?, the first Polish residency platform.

 

For the third year in a row, the organizers handed the festival over to artists in residence, who use a specially designated presentation space to seek their own methods of dance investigation. They are accompanied by Patrycja Płanik who documents the process. As was the case in the previous editions, the festival will present stage works and unique documentaries linked inseparably with the working process devoted to # body ? correlated space ? search for pure choreography derived from the processual perception of the body as an object. The festival will include presentations of five pieces created as part of the residence (Justyna Jasłowska, Karol Tymiński, Ramona Nagabczyńska, Marta Ziółek, Sławek Bendrat) and three productions supported by the MAAT FESTIVALS and created by Anita Wach, Magdalena Tuka, Mikołaj Mikołajczyk, Patrycja Płanik, Marcin Janus, Tomasz Bazan, Daiusuke Yoshimoto. The organizers are delighted to invite the audience to the home of dance inhabited by the invited artists and their creative work.

 

 Every finale day will be concluded by an evening meeting with the artists hosted by one of this edition’s curators Anna Królica.

 

2015 is devoted to Tadeusz Kantor and his work, which has had a tremendous impact on Polish and international art. In this exceptional year, we celebrate and emphasize the achievements of Kantor as a reformer and multidisciplinary creator imbuing himself and others with an extensively insightful perception of reality. Inspired by the research conducted by Anna Królica who began to systematically research and comment on the analogies between Tadeusz Kantor and dance theatre; the vast space explored by Kantor in his own performances; finally, the universe of Kantor?s objects, we give artists the floor to engage in research and exploration, draw inspiration from Kantor and reflect on their own art projects centred around the legendary artist.  ?This year?s festival has adopted Tadeusz Kantor as its leading figure and leitmotif. The year of Tadeusz Kantor which we are currently celebrating had encouraged many to pit themselves against the legend of Polish theatre and draw inspiration, directions, and incentive from his legacy. Does Kantor have anything in common with dance? To what extent are his choreographies fascinating and analysable? Or are they more than just about movement? Perhaps we should reach further, flowing along with the champion of Polish theatre, delving into the understatement?

 

 

 

The curators of this year?s edition have juxtaposed several artists whose oeuvre is pervaded by completely different styles, forms, and techniques. Each uses a different choreographic dialect ? will they be able to come up with a common code for the collective known as KANTOR NOW? Or do they have to do that in the first place, for the more original their works, the more recognizable, specific and unique their collection?

 

 

 

Eight people. Jasłowska, Tymiński, Bendrat, Ziółek, Nagabczyńska, Mikołajczyk, Wach, Tuka. Five spent two weeks in Lublin, soaking up its energy. The remaining three? Mikołajczyk and Wach established themselves two years ago, but judging by their unpredictability, their contributions will be far from obvious. The three created their work outside of the festival seat ? what will they bring to the table and in what ways will Tadeusz Kantor mark their pieces? Finally, there is the Maat Project Theatre with their Polish-Japanes fantasies and spaces filled with body, music, film, motion, and image; and Patrycja Płanik?s phenomenal films which continue to underscore the shape of each residency, perhaps more revealing than the artists? pieces themselves, presenting the residents at work and at their leisure; accompanying them throughout the creative process and at moments of relaxation; documentaries veiled with mystery, surrealism and fictionalized themes.

 

 

 

Although the festival?s blueprint is informed by Théâtre de la mort, we are far from restricting ourselves to that period of Kantor?s life, since the remainder is just as interesting and inspiring. What will we see in the works of the Polish artists? References to various types of memory, personal confessions, body manifestos, open-ended performances or rigidly planned structures?
