Teatr Wielki ? Polish National Opera in Warsaw invites to the premiere of Fredriana that will take place on Saturday, April 6th, celebrating the bicentenary of Stanislaw Moniuszko?s birth. Fredriana is a ballet evening in two parts, each based on a comedy by Polish playwright Aleksander Fredro and performed to Moniuszko’s music. The first part ? Sarmatian Parable ? is a ballet in one act, based on Fredro’s Revenge, choreographed by Conrad Drzewiecki in 1975 and recreated in 2019 by Emil Wesolowski. The second part is a ballet entitled Husband and Wife, based on Fredro’s comedy of the same title and choreographed Anna Hop’s. Husband and Wife will have its opening night on the 6th of April.
?I have never attempted to explore what makes a marriage truly happy. However, I think that two people should match each other like a pair of horses having: an even gait, an even turn, equal fire – then the journey together is pleasant and far less of a drag. But when one is swift, and the other lazy, one is soft, and the other hardy, when one is pulling while the other is jumping ? then the devil may take it!?
Here is Count Fredro at his best! Love affairs were one of his favourite themes. The lightness and zest with which he presented them, inspired choreographers of the oncoming premiere Fredriana at the Teatr Wielki – National Opera. Fredro’s comedies, combined with Moniuszko’s humorous yet mysterious, lyrical yet dramatic, music, turn out to be a perfect duo. The audience will have a chance to see this duo in both parts of the ballet evening at the Teatr Wielki – National Opera.
The concert overture Fairy Tale, one of Moniuszko?s most celebrated pieces, will accompany the ballet Sarmatian Parable – choreographed by the eminent Polish artist Condrad Drzewiecki and based on Revenge by Fredro. It was Emil Wesolowski, Drzewiecki’s former student and assistant, who, in cooperation with Renata Smukala, has undertaken the reconstruction, production and direction of the recent version of the Sarmatian Parable. Contrary to typical ballets, Drzewiecki’s Sarmatian Parable, is extremely theatrical, visually expressive, amusing and very demanding for the dancers in terms of advanced acting technique. Emil Wesolowski created his performance with the utmost respect for Drzewiecki’s original choreography. In this way he managed to preserve the timeless value of Drzewiecki’s choreography and to develop a work that perfectly contrasts with the second ballet of the evening ? the truly contemporary in form Husband and wife choreographed by Anna Hop.
Husband and wife is a ballet that presents the reality of marital adventures based on an love theme well-known from Fredro’s comedy. The love theme known from Fredro?s Husband and Wife is combined with the ballet music Na kwaterze composed by Moniuszko. This is the colourful and vibrant Fredro’s and Moniuszko’s land of joke at its best. Anna Hop has chosen the turn of the 1950s and 1960s as the social and aesthetic landscape for the ballet’s narrative. At that time, just like in the times of Fredro and Moniuszko, the role of men and women was still strictly defined by tradition and customs. Anna Hop explores the relationship between the characters, reaches out to the sources of their motivation, giving them a much deeper expression than the one of a superficial comedy. Hop’s ballet is a choreographic mosaic of styles and staging strategies. Apart from the four main characters, Anna Hop brings onstage also so-called ?puppets? – a group of dancers who literally and figuratively animate ballet’s action.
