Anna Piotrowska

Anna Piotrowska holds a PhD in musical arts, in the discipline of eurhythmics and dance; she is a choreographer, director, contemporary dance teacher, and dancer. A founder and Chairman of the Board of the Dance Development Foundation “eferte”, she is also the founder of “mufmi” in Warsaw and a holder of the British Council Awards / Young Polish Arts Entrepreneur scholarship. She has founded and coordinated numerous national and international educational and cultural programs. Since 1996, she has developed more than 120 original choreographies and performances.

Since 2020, Piotrowska has been the director of ROZBARK Dance and Movement Theatre. Currently, she is vice-dean and lecturer at the Faculty of Dance Theatre in Bytom / Ludwik Solski Academy for the Dramatic Arts in Cracow. Her collaborations include the Silesian Dance Theatre (throughout the entire period of its activity), the Polish Dance Theatre in Poznań, and the H. Tomaszewski Pantomime Theatre in Wrocław. She is the author of choreographies and stage movement for many dance and drama performances and original productions. She has been invited to numerous dance festivals in Poland and abroad. From 2014 through 2014, she served as Artistic Director of the ROZBARK Theatre in Bytom.

Piotrowska has been exploring the issue of process work for many years, discovering, among other things, new tools for exploring laboratory work on text, character creation, as well as enhancing experiences in heightened states of body and mind by employing imaginations and emotions that influence the creation of movement and searching for energy channels that unlock dance itself. Artistically, Piotrowska is interested in improvisation and enhancing corporeal consciousness and mindfulness as tools for multiplied, multifunctional observation. She has been investigating the relationship of the objective body under a category that she has dubbed “onebodyspacerecognizer.”
Piotrowska is the author of nearly 130 original dance pieces.

• Main prize of the 15th International Presentations of Contemporary Dance Forms, Kalisz 2007, for the performance Four Roses for Lucienne, choreographed and directed by Anna Piotrowska for mufmi dance theater. Jurors: Jacek Łumiński (Bytom; chairman), Peter Schelling (Switzerland), Dorota Sajewska (Warsaw), Paweł Kamza (Poznań), Barbara Fibingier (Kalisz) – secretary. The jury, working under the direction of Jacek Łumiński, awarded the Warsaw company for “a political statement on the treatment of the female body in Polish society, for modalities of stage expression, straddling between irony and seriousness, skills and limitations of the body.”
• Main prize at the 2006 scena_off / 14th International Presentations of Contemporary Dance Forms, Kalisz 2016, awarded by a jury consisting of: Jacek Łumiński (chairman), Helge Letonja, Robert Andreson, Jacek Poniedziałek, Barbara Fibingier (Kalisz, secretary) for the performance Gemini by Anna Piotrowska and Patrycja Dońska for “the embodiment of emotions and thoughts through dance in the performance Gemini”;
• In 2006, Anna Piotrowska won two awards at the International Solo Duo Dance Festival in Budapest: one in THE BEST SOLO category for her performance Mission, another in THE BEST DUO category for Gemini.
