Polish National Ballet is currently working on a new ballet evening entitled Lost Souls that will have its premiere on the 16 November 2019 on the main stage of Teatr Wielki ? Polish National Opera.

Lost Souls ballet evening will be composed of three one-act works by three top ballet choreographers. The evening will feature the work of the late Bronisława Niżyńska ? a legendary artist of Polish origin (Les noces to the music of Igor Stravinsky). The evening will also feature two renowned contemporary choreographers: Wayne McGregor (Infra to Max Richter?s music) and Krzysztof Pastor ? the Director of Polish National Ballet (Do Not Go Gentle… to Stravinsky?s music). These three ballet works come from different periods, but they share a common interest in and deep exploration of the variety of human personalities and human relations in the reality of ever-changing social conditions.

Les noces (English: The Wedding), described by Igor Stravinsky as ?Russian choreographic scenes with song and music?, is the less known, although equally brilliant, part of the composer?s diptych inspired by the folklore of old Russia. The classic choreography by Bronislava Nijinska (1891-1972) ? sister of the legendary Vaslav Nijinsky ? is the finest work of this highly talented artist, performed in the most important ballet stages of the world.

In Do Not Go Gentle? Krzysztof Pastor also uses Stravinsky?s music. The choreography of Do Not Go Gentle? was created by Pastor in 2000 for the Dutch National Ballet. Stravinsky wrote the dirge canons and a song to a poem by Dylan Thomas soon after the poet had promised to write a libretto for Stravinsky, yet died before he could keep his word. The music is sorrowful, nocturne-like, lamenting, and strikingly different to the orgiastically exuberant Les noces.

The evening will have a truly unforgettable ending in the form of Infra by Wayne McGregor, whose equally stunning ballet work ? Chroma ? we have recently had the chance to experience in Teatr Wielki. Wayne McGregor created Infra in 2008 for the Royal Ballet in London to the original music score by Max Richter and the piece has been receiving enthusiastic reviews all over the world ever since.

Polish National Ballet will be accompanied by live music played by pianists and the Orchestra of the Teatr Wielki ? Polish National Opera directed by Grzegorz Nowak and Chorus and, in Stravinsky?s music pieces enriched by the participation of several vocal soloists and the Chorus of Teatr Wielki ? Polish National Opera.

Performances: 16-17 and 23-24 November 2019 and 14-16 June 2020.
