Beginning September 2016, Maciej Kuźmiński has been appointed a new Artistic Director of the Caro Dance Theatre, residing in the Centre for Culture and Art in Siedlce, Poland. The choreographer will be responsible for both artistic and organisational fields, creating new works for the company, as well as coordinating national and international events held at the centre. Kuźmiński, replacing the previous director Paulina Jaksim, was recommended by culture centre vice-director Iwona Orzełowska and approved by the current director Waldemar Koperkiewicz.
Maciej Kuźmiński (born 1985) has been a freelance performer and pedagogue since 2007. For the last 3 years, he has been producing and directing independent choreographic performances. Since 2013, his works, formally daring with weighted, dynamic movement, have been presented over 50 times in Germany, England, Austria, the Netherlands, Serbia, Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus, Slovenia, Hungary, Brazil and Israel. He has been honoured with some significant awards, such as the Audience Award at the Polish Dance Platform for quartet “Room 40”, and main awards at international choreographic competitions in Hannover and Stuttgart in Germany, and Gdańsk in Poland for solo “Dominique”. In June 2016, his “Repetition” represented Poland at a well-known international dance fair Tanzmesse NRW in Düsseldorf, Germany. Kuźmiński is currently teaching and co-creating the educational programme at the Institute for Artistic Dance in Belgrade, Serbia, and has been a full-time pedagogue at the Dance Theatre Department in Bytom of the Cracow’s National Theatre Academy in 2013-2016. He has completed with distinction M.A. Choreography studies, and with 1st class honours B.A. Dance Theatre studies at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London.
From the artist: The appointment for the artistic director creates many opportunities, and the ambitions are high. I?m planning to make new works for the Caro Dance Theatre, but also open the doors of the Siedlce Culture Centre for the national and international dance makers. I’d like this institution to make its mark on the dance-map of Poland. I also hope to initiate the first Polish production house network as well as create a new festival for contemporary dance.
For a few years now, Caro Dance Theatre has had its own budget and stage, which puts it in line with very few institutional dance theatre companies in Poland. Currently, despite lack of full-time company of performers, CDT has its own repertoire created by Iwona Orzełowska, Paulina Jaksim and Jakub Mędrzycki. The new work by the Caro Dance Theatre directed by Maciej Kuźmiński will premiere on the 25th of November on the Siedlce Culture Centre’s main stage, to later tour to Zduńska Wola in Poland, and Pilsen in Czech Republic. The work is co-funded by Zduńska Wola Culture Centre, East European Performing Arts Platform and Visegrad Artist Residency Fund.
