The performances are part of the autumn tour of the Krakow Dance Theater, which includes a total of ten presentations in seven countries.
Treatise, choreographed by Milan Tomášik, is inspired by the titular graphic score created by Cornelius Cardew in the years 1963-1967. It consists of 193 pages full of symbols, lines, and various geometric and abstract shapes. When publishing the score, Cardew did not explain how it should be performed. Although it concerned a musical piece, it surprises with its unconventional visuality, which is more reminiscent of abstract typography than familiar sheet music.
The visual richness – from simple broken lines, curves, dots and spirals to overwhelmingly complex structures – was the starting point for the dance performance Treatise. Cardew’s work poses an exciting challenge: how to interpret, transform (visually impressive) musical score into dance and choreography. The form of the performance is simultaneously an exploration of the physical, visual and aural representation of one of the possible interpretations of the score. Individual actions are based on Cardew’s work, but their final form and composition go beyond the source material. The Krakow Dance Theatre company creates its own spatial, temporal and unique universe.
