Katarzyna Chmielewska –dancer, choreographer, dance instructor, co-founder of Dada von Bzdülöw Theatre (1993) and since 2008 – president of Dada von Bzdülöw Theatre Association.
In 1993 she graduated from the Secondary Ballet School in Gdansk and several years later she studied contemporary dance at Contemporary Dance School P.A.R.T.S in Brussels (1996–1997). She has collaborated with many drama and independent theatres: Baltic Opera in Gdańsk (1993–1994), Gdansk Dance Theatre (1994–1995), Witold Gombrowicz City (Miejski) Theatre in Gdynia (1997–2000), Klub Żak in Gdynia (2000–2008), Wybrzeże Theatre in Gdańsk (2008 –till now).
Since 1993 she has co-created Dada von Bzdülöw Theatre. With Dada Theatre she created her own choreographies, in such performances as: /Si/ (2000), Dialogus in conventione(2001),so beautiful(2002),Bonsai(2005),Juicy Flesh(2005) and co-created and co-performed in most performances, includingMagnolia(2003),Several Witty Observations (à la Gombrowicz) 2004,Eden(2006),Faktor T(2008),Red grass (2009),Caffè Latte(2009),LeSacre(2010). To date she has performed with Dada Theatre in many countries all over the world, including UK, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech, Finland, France, Spain, India, Ireland, Island, Israel, Canada, Lithuania, Germany, Palestine, Slovenia, USA, Switzerland, Sweden and Italy. While working with Dada she has also given contemporary dance technique and improvisation classes.
Since she started professional dance career, she has co-created performances in Tricity in co-operation with other choreographers, including Melissa Monteros (Collisions,1995,Departures,1996), Avi Kaiser (In the Body,1999), Tatiana Baganova (Papugaj,2000), Roberto Olivan (Natural Strange Days,2001), Chiharu Mamiya-Jędrzejewska (soloComplexion,2007).
At the same time Chmielewska produced choreographies and created stage movement for drama theatre throughout Poland: Miejski Theatre in Gdynia:Nie przerywajcie zabawy(1997), Wybrzeże Theatre in Gdańsk:Monologi Waginy(2002),Mewa (2002),Zwyczajne Szaleństwa(2003),Orkiestra Titanic(2007),Farsa zWalworth(2008),Zawisza Czarny(2010),Być jak Kazimierz Deyna(2010),Per procura(2011), Studio Theatre in Warsaw:Mewa(2002),Księżna Amalfi (2010), Powszechny Theatre in Kraków:Sindbad(2004), the Stefan Jaracz Theatre in Olsztyn:Wesele udrobnomieszczan(2009), Drama Theatre in Wałbrzych:Zemsta(2009).
Chmielewska has actively participated in many Polish and international dance and theatre projects, including Landscape X – she performed in Porwanie Europy directed by Piotr Cieplak (Stockholm, 1998) / X-group – within a six-month project for young choreographers she created Enter and with Magdalena Reiter she co-created a duo Wszystkie Apropos (PARTS, Brussels 2000) / B-Visible − she run improvisation workshop (Ghent 2002) / Improvisations – she participated in a series of improvisation workshops by Thomas Houert (Prague 2003) / Trans Danse Europe – European project during which she co-created Several Witty Observations (Avignon, Brussels, Helsinki, Prague, Reykjavik 2004-2006) / ODYS-SEAS– she performed in a theatre project at the Gdańsk Shipyard (Gdańsk 2004)/Angels of Stealth – she created a choreography and performed in a multimedia project by Rodney Place (Warszawa, Paryż 2005) / Co-operation – she co-run and participated in an international workshop for dance choreographers (Gdańsk, Geneva, Paris 2006) / Real time composition – she participated in a workshop by Michael Schumaher (Stary Browar, Poznań 2007) / Turning Point – she co-created a duo with Bożena Eltermann (Gdańsk 2008) /Factor T – co-production with Old Brewery in Poznań and Dance Advance (USA) – she co-created a performance presented in Poznań and at the festival Live Arts in Philadelphia (Poznań, Philadelphia 2007-2008) / Incubator – a workshop project in which she created a performance Świat zastępczy with a group of students of Alternative Dance School (Klub Żak) and b’boys from Tricity (Klub Żak, Gdańsk 2008); and Mackbeth – she performed in a multimedia performance produced by Shakespeare Festival (Gdańsk 2010).
