Katarzyna Pastuszak dancer, director, choreographer, artistic director of Amareya Theatre. Theatre theorist and culture organizer, she has researched butoh dance for many years. In 1997 she was an intern at Znak Theatre and in 19992000 at Wojciech Misiura Expression Theatre; in 20002001 at Bożena Elternanns Cynada Theatre and in 2003 at Eugenio Barbas Odin Theatre. She graduated in Scandinavian Studies from the University of Gdańsk and in Theatre Studies from the Drama School in Warsaw. She received a scholarship from the vice-chancellor of the State Drama School and from Minister of Culture and Art for her scientific achievements (2005). She took part in numerous international dance and theatre workshops in Poland and abroad (e.g. Gdańsk, Bytom, Poznań, Göteborg).
Butoh dance was a breakthrough in her theatre research. She became fascinated by philosophy of butoh and organized Butoh Dance Festival in the first decade of the 21th century. Her butoh dancers include: Itto Morita, Mika Takeuchi, Minako Seki, Marie-Gabrielle Rotie, Yumiko Yoshioka, Atsushi Takenouchi, Yuri Nagaoka, Seisaku, Mikami Kayo, Ko Murobushi, Daisuke Yoshimoto, Joan Laage. She runs butoh and theatre workshops; she also completed a psychosomatic dance and movement therapy course Dancing Down the Bones Somatic Practice Dance and Movement Therapy in London. In her everyday life she is a curator of Theatre Stage at Żak Club in Gdańsk where she organizes cultural events, including: Gdańsk Dance Festival, Beyond the Borders project, Butoh Dance Festival.
Since 2007 Pastuszak has collaborated with the Department of Cultural Studies at the University of Gdańsk, where she has run classes in culture promotion. For several years she has published articles on dance and theatre and given lectures on the history of butoh.
