Today at 7 pm Maciej Kuźmińskiis showing his Room 40at the National Theatre in Belgrade. The piece features students of the Dance Theatre Department in Bytom (Ludwik Solski Academy for the Dramatic Arts in Cracow): Daniela Komędera (soloist), Anna Kamińska, Dominika Wiak, and Katarzyna Pawłowska. A week later the work will be presented in Lublin, where the choreographer will also run workshops on the Dynamic Phrasing technique conceived by him and on composition. Preceding the presentation of Room 40, the choreographer will premiere his solo titledMaciej Kuźmińskiin Lublin (21 March). Both pieces will be then shown in the course of April and June in Bytom, Zduńska Wola, Wrocław and Hannover.

Room 40
The work features various images, seemingly unrelated scenes, which prompt the viewer to shift between complete concentration on what’s happening on stage to self-reflection, while the performers shift between hardly invisible muscle spasms to virtuoso choreographic sets executed with full attention and awareness. Totally exhausted dancers take a specific test of endurance. There is also a role for the audience to play: they too have the right to act.

This improvised performance explores the history of movement training inscribed in the dancer’s body over the many years of his education. Facing an empty stage, Maciej has to face up to his habits and mannerisms, revealing the limits of his capabilities to the audience as well as to himself.The performance is a process naturally incorporating spontaneity and exhaustion, self-awareness, honesty and searching.
