The Jury consisted of the following experts:

– Rafik Hubert Sabbagh, Director of the Festival Quartiers Danses

– Thierry Gourmelen, Director of the Choreographic Gallery and Mixité Festival

– Andrea Pena, choreographer

– Bernard Dubreuil, Director of the Patin Libre

– Mario Arsenault, visual artist

– Nathalie Berndsen, pedagogue, drama teacher.

In Absolutely Fabulous Dancers, the actress, the dancer and the choreographer are looking at their artistic roots and their stories together, taking on the topic of identity, education and climate changes. They try to identify what gives them wings and what brings them down. All of this is carried out in the rhythms of 1980’s music, as well as folk and classical music. Three artists of the Absolutely Fabulous Dancers seek answers to their questions and inspiration in the past, in the history of Poland, in everyday movement, body memory and performative tools. In this way, the artists from HOTELOKO built their unique and absurd dance style. The performance had its premiere on 30 June 2017 in Warsaw.

HOTELOKO movement makers collective operates under the umbrella of the Fundacja Rozwoju Teatru ?NOWA FALA? [frt:nf] / Theatre Development Foundation ?New Wave? and it is also one of the organisations that are active within the Dance Art Centre in Warsaw.

The presentation of Absolutely Fabulous Dancers in Montreal was supported by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and co-financed by the City of Warsaw and the following partners: The Mazovia Institute of Culture and PROM Kultury Saska Kępa (Culture FERRY Saska Kępa).

It was 17. edition of the Festival Quartiers Danses, presenting 38 performances (including 12 in the public space) that came from Canada, Switzerland, France, Denmark, the USA, Brazil and Poland. More information about the festival: https://quartiersdanses.com/en/

HOTELOKO movement makers

The HOTELOKO movement makers collective was founded in 2016 from the HOTELOKO theatre company established in 2011 by actress, director and producer Agata Życzkowska. Since 2016, the artist runs the collective together with choreographer: Magdalena Przybysz  and their core interests revolve around new choreography and dance experimentation. Together they carry out artistic, educational and social projects. They also invite other artists from Warsaw, Poland, Europe and all over the world to co-operate with them.

Why HOTELOKO?

Because the collective does not have, by default, a permanent venue and is open to moving around (HOTEL), highly values madness (from the Spanish word ?LOCO? meaning mad), and it draws attention to the experience inscribed in the eye (?OKO? means ?eye? in Polish).

Why movement makers?

Since the main means of storytelling for the collective is movement (although the team boldly incorporates music and text into their performances as well.)

The collective has developed the following performances to date: frau/mujer/femme, #moiprzyjacieletancza, Absolutely Fabulous Dancers, Darklena, Insta Show and frau blush. They have created a distinc language of expression, a slightly freak dancing style highlighting the diversity stemming from the different backgrounds and roots of the performers.

The actress Agata Życzkowska?s signature style are sequins that she wears in each of her performances. The glitter and shine is an intended image and is defined by the statement ?I live inside a sequin ball?.

Magdalena Przybysz is fascinated with somatic methods, especially Body Mind Centering, authentic movement and feminist threads.
