The 14th Court Dance Festival CRACOVIA DANZA is about to start on 28 July and last until 4 August 2013. This year’s theme is “the Spanish Court”. The opening gala (28 July, 7 pm), taking place on the open-air stage of Villa Decius, will feature the piece Cracovia Danza for Barbara Sparti. Marie-Claire Bär Le Corre and dancers of Cracovia Danza will present original choreographies dating back to the 15th-17th century Italy recreated by Barbara Sparti from different written records. Sparti – a renowned dancer, choreographer and expert in old Italian dances – cooperated for many years with Cracovia Danza and the Court Dance Festival, during which she conducted numerous workshops. During the commemorative evening, she will be remembered through a multimedia presentation, while the dancers of Cracovia Danza will dance choreographies which Sparti taught them.

Barbara Sparti passed away on 17 June 2013. She was born in 1932 in New York, where she studiedmusic and dance. Subsequently, she moved to Rome, where she lived and worked for many years. Shetrained a great number of dancers and dance teachers. She founded and led (1975-88) Gruppo di DanzaRinascimentale”, an ensemble which performed at numerous Italian and European festivals. She createdchoreographies for plays and operas staged in theatres and broadcast on TV. She conducted classes onItalian dance of the 15th-17th centuries, both in Italy and across the globe. In 1990 the University ofCalifornia in Los Angeles named Sparti Distinguished Visiting Professor. She also collaborated withother universities, such as the University of California in Santa Cruz, Tel Aviv University, the HebrewUniversity in Jerusalem and Princeton University. She authored a range of publications on the history ofdance, translated Guglielmo Ebreo’s 1463 treaty on dance (Oxford University Press, 1993/1995), wrotethe introduction to the reproduction of Santucci’s 1614 treaty (Olms), and contributed to Imaging Dance:Visual Representations of Dancers and Dancing (Olms, 2011).
