Rehearsals are beginning for Maciej Kuźmiński’s new piece entitled my body falls lighter / i spada lekko ciało moje / mein körper schwereloss. The work has been commissioned by the Staatstheater Kassel in Germany and it will be Staatstheater’s largest production this season – premiering on the main stage with the capacity of one thousand seats, accompanied by the entire dance company (20 dancers) and a full orchestra. It will also be the Kuźmiński’s largest production to date and his first collaboration with an orchestra.
The work is scheduled to premiere on International Dance Day – 29 April 2022. Subsequent performances will take place on 5, 7, 10, 20 May and 8 June 2022.
In 2006–2021, choreographer Johannes Wieland created dance theatre performances at the Staatstheater Kassel. Now a completely new team has formed at the theatre, led by its new artistic director – Thorsten Teubl joined by the dramaturg and manager – Silke Meier-Broesicke. The new company has an international character and consists of dancers from Israel, Italy, England, Sweden, South Korea, France, Lithuania, Russia, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Uganda. Stage and costume designer Marcus Meyer and conductor Mario Hartmuth are also working closely with the choreographer in the realisation of my body falls lighter.
Born in 1985, Maciej Kuźmiński belongs to the first generation of Polish choreographers who develop their career abroad due to the opportunities created after Poland joined the EU in 2004. Kuźmiński gradually managed to build a rich artistic portfolio composed of choreographies and their successful appearances at international choreography competitions in Stuttgart, Hanover, or Belgrade. In 2017, he began working with companies and continues to choreograph for Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, Theatre Regensburg, and Polish Dance Theatre, among others. His work, described as “intellectual and intense” and “combining beauty and concept”, has been shown in over 20 countries. Kuźmiński’s work is based on his own movement and composition technique “Dynamic Phrasing”, based on the flow of energy through the body, which he teaches at dance conservatories and academies in Europe and beyond. Maciej is also an active producer in Poland. He is the founder and current manager of the Polish Dance Network.
