“Solo Dance Contest 2021” is an international contest for a short contemporary dance solo. The Contest will be held during the 13. Gdansk Dance Festival, between 23-27August 2021. For four days, the audience will have the unique opportunity of watching professional dancers and dance school students perform their solos.

The Jury is composed of artists and experts in the field of contemporary dance that were invited by Club Żak. Four names have been announced so far, the name of the last Jury member will be revealed later. Also the audience will have a chance to choose their favourite solo and appoint the award. The stake is 6.000 Euro including the audience award.

Jury:

Lisbeth Gruwez – is an artistic director of Voetvolk, founded in 2007. She studied at the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp and at P.A.R.T.S., kicking off her professional career at Ultima Vez. Since 1999, she has worked with Jan Fabre on many performances, including the famous solo Quando l’uomo principale – una donna. Being one of Fabre’ guerriers de la beauté she was to be seen in the Pierre Coulibeuf’s film of the same name. She’s also worked with Jan Lauwers, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and others. Lisbeth regularly conducts workshops and other types of artistic advisory activities and coaching. She is one of the “KVS faces”, the open ensemble of artists and thinkers associated with the Royal Flemish Theatre of Brussels.

Joanna Nadrowska – is a dancer, teacher and choreographer, active on the Tri-City dance scene. She graduated with honors from the Instructor Qualification Course in Warsaw, specializing in jazz dance. Since 2012, she has worked as a dancer of the Sopot Dance Theater. She is a co-founder of the Tri-City Creative Collective and a scholarship holder of the President of the City of Sopot and the Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship. She participated in the Solo Dance Contest as a dancer. She also judged youth and children’s groups in dance tournaments as a juror, and she is a thorough observer of the Polish dance scene. Her voice in the Jury of the Solo Dance Contest 2021 is to provide a fresh perspective and insight from the Polish young generation of dancers.

 

Konrad Kurowski – since 2014 he has been a member of the Lublin Dance Theater and an employee of the Cultural Center in Lublin. As part of this activity, he supports dance community, both in Poland and abroad. Depending on the needs of the project, he can be a producer, manager, educator, playwright and specialist in the field of audience development. He is also a co-curator of the International Dance Theaters Meetings in Lublin, one of the largest and oldest dance festivals in Poland; member and organizer of dance initiatives: Przestrzenie Sztuki. Taniec, the Polish Dance Network and Aerowaves.

Tero Saarinen – is a Finnish dancer and choreographer. He has made more than 40 creations, for Tero Saarinen Company and other prominent dance groups including Nederlands Dans Theater, Batsheva Dance Company, Gothenburg Opera Ballet, and many others. As a choreographer, Saarinen is known for his unique movement language, an inventive mixture of grotesqueness and beauty that plays with balance, and off-balance. His internationally acclaimed choreographies have often been described as total artworks. Saarinen has received numerous acknowledgements of his work as an artist, both in Finland and abroad.
