?Camille Saint-Saëns?s The Carnival of the Animals was composed in the 19th century; the piece I choreographed plays out in modern-day reality. Although the share the same title, they constitute two different entities. My rendition of The Carnival of the Animals includes Saint-Saëns?s compositions ? beautiful, suggestive illustrations. Interpreting each miniature, I was not influenced by their titles, but rather their musical character. Thus, I changed Tortoises into Praying Mantis, given that their charm inspired a choreographic interpretation that emphasises the relativity of time on stage and the ways of conceptualising tempos in dance,? says Anna Hop, author of the concept and choreography in The Carnival of the Animals.
The Carnival of the Animals is another family-friendly proposal of the Wrocław Opera in 2016/17. Following the February premiere of In the Land of the Magic Flute, the Wrocław Opera has now reached out to its mixed-age audience with a proposal that introduces the youngest opera-goers to the world of dance, while retaining a good deal seriousness that should render the piece equally attractive to the adult viewers who would like to learn more about the art of ballet. Anna Hop?s auteur interpretation of The Carnival of the Animals is merely a starting point for a story of dreams, fantasies, and the world of dance. Such an idea justifies the presence of the narrator who guides the viewers through the dreamscapes created in the unconscious of its main protagonist; throughout their journey, the audience are also introduced to the world of pointes, tutus, and pas de deux.
Based on Camille Saint-Saëns?s The Carnival of the Animals, the piece was choreographed by Anna Hop, a young Polish choreographer linked with the Polish National Ballet and a recent collaborator of Oslo?s Den Norske Opera and Ballet. The Orchestra of the Wrocław Opera will be conducted by Marcin Nałęcz-Niesiołowski, director of the Wrocław Opera. The stage design and video projections have been designed by Małgorzata Szabłowska, with costumes and illustrations contributed by Katarzyna Rott (Silverclock). The piece will be performed by the dancers of the Wrocław Opera Ballet, with the solo parts performed by. Remy Lamping, Dajana Kłos, Daniel Agudo Gallardo and Łukasz Ożga, among others.
Repeat performances will be presented on 17 and 28 May at noon.
