Fundacja Scena Współczesna (Contemporary Stage Foundation) consists of three entities: Zawirowania (Whirl), Teatr Scena Współczesna (Contemporary Stage Theatre) and Centrum Teatru i Tańca w Warszawie (Theatre and Dance Centre in Warsaw).
Zawirowania (Whirl) is the brand name for Teatr Tańca (Theatre of Dance), which puts on dance/performance art productions, and Akademia Tańca (Academy of Dance), whose teaching staff regularly performs in repertory productions. Classes of dance and yoga are offered at each stage of proficiency, from beginner to advanced. The students have a chance to take part in theatre project auditions. Teatr Tańca’s chief choreographer Elwira Piorun also works as director of Akademia Tańca. The theatre group’s priority is international cooperation. Before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, Teatr Tańca Zawirowania produced an average of forty performances abroad each year. Despite the difficulties, the annual International Dance Festival Zawirowania is still going strong having its eighteenth edition this summer.
Teatr Scena Współczesna (Contemporary Stage Theatre) directed by the chairman of the Foundation, Włodzimierz Kaczkowski, is the second enterprise. The Theatre was established twenty years ago in Warsaw, and its most popular title – Dzieła wszystkie Szekspira (Complete Works by William Shakespeare) – has been staged more than two thousand times. Similar to Zawirowania, Scena Współczesna manages its own Academy, which provides acting classes for schoolchildren.
The newest programme of Społeczna Instytucja Kultury (Social Cultural Institution) – Centrum Teatru i Tańca w Warszawie (Theatre and Dance Centre in Warsaw) – was created in 2019. As the name suggests, its principal aim is to integrate the theatre and dance scene of the Polish capital city. The Centre offers the young artists from these two fields an opportunity to realise their own projects, and it also connects all the different areas of the Foundation’s activity.
