The Polish Dance Theatre – Poznań Ballet was founded in 1973 as the Conrad Drzewiecki group. Inspired by Polish folk and modern technique, Drzewiecki created his own style, which he cultivated for years.
Since 1988 the Theatre has been directed by Ewa Wycichowska, former soloist of the Grand Theatre in Łódź for many years, professor of music arts and head of the Institute of Dance at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. The theatre, directed by Wycichowska, became a “forum of choreographers”, inviting for collaboration from outstanding Polish and foreign representatives of dance stage: Birgit Cullberg, Mats Ek, Örjan Andersson, Karine Saporta, Ohad Naharin and Yossi Berg as well as Jacek Przybyłowicz and Rafał Dziemidok. The Atelier of the Polish Dance Theatre – open for young choreographers – operates at the theatre.
Since 1994 the theatre has organized the International Contemporary Dance Workshop – one of the biggest and most important events of its kind in Poland.
